There are seven primary energy centers in the body, called Chakras.

These chakras are energetic wheels located throughout the physical body and relate to specific physical, mental and emotional conditions.

It is thought that when we have physical ailments, they also create an emotional imbalance. When the chakras are open, energy is flowing through them, and the body is in an optimal state. When blocked or functioning poorly, stale energy is created leading to physical and emotional issues.

The Root Chakra or Muladhara is the first Chakra (energy center) in our body located at the base of the spine. It is responsible for our feelings of security, stability and is the “root” of who you are and establishes the connection to your physical body, the earth, and your environment.

The Root Chakra is about your survival. Think fight or flight; it is your instinctual, most primal nature. Therefore, this is also the chakra of our ancestral DNA and those memories handed down through generations.  Many, many people have issues with the root chakra due to this ancestral memory, or our lives as we navigate loss, war, hunger, and abuse.

Each Chakra impacts the others, so if one is weak, imbalanced, or blocked--effects can be felt throughout the body.

For me—if I’m going to have issues with my Chakras—it usually begins at the Root or the first chakra. I have problems with security, so be it a new home purchase, a new business venture or anything I perceive as possibility impacting my finances or safety in a negative way--I close up. I close off. I pull everything inward, and this Chakra begins to have issues.

When your first energy center shuts down, it is tough for energy to flow into the second chakra and beyond.

The impact to the root chakra begins to surface outwardly in daily life through physical symptoms and interactions with others. Some signs that the root chakra may be out of balance or weak include:

*   You feel tired, drained or lacking in physical stamina and vitality.
*   You feel insecure if everything isn’t going the way you expect it to, or if you are dealing with anything outside your comfort zone.
*   You feel that the key to your security lies in money, and your safety is attained through money.
*   Physical symptoms include: adrenal fatigue (fight or flight), foot and leg problems, rectal and colon problems, eating disorders, immune disorders and/or bone issues.

When the root chakra is in balance, you feel supported, a sense of connection and safety to the physical world, and grounded. This is why it’s imperative to balance the root chakra first. When you restore your center of stability and security, you impact change on the other chakra centers allowing them to be stronger and energy to flow to them.

If you think about it in terms of stability, security, and connection, it makes sense begin healing the root chakra as a first step to support any kind of personal growth or change you may be going through.

You can use color therapy, visualization, scent and/or affirmations to help unblock an impacted root chakra.

At Angels and Sages, we use a combination of aromatherapy oils, candles, meditation and mantra to help balance all Chakra energy centers. 

Mantras can be as simple as: I trust my life. Get out into nature with a walk. Take off your shoes and stand with your feet physically touching the ground. As you walk concentrate on your feet touching the ground as you say your mantra. Be mindful in your approach. Take your time. 

Another easy way to balance the root Chakra is to take a shower or bath. Bath Ceremonies can be as simple as adding a few drops of our Root Chakra multi-use oil into a warm bath and meditating on feeling connected in your own body and to the element of water. You can grab a stone or piece of river rock to further connect. Again, be mindful in your approach. Take your time. Repeat your affirmations. As you let the water out of the bath or down the drain, imagine your fears being carried away with it.
